Following the very wet weather the chalk walls have become saturated and the recent cold snap has resulted in frost and thaw which has caused deterioration to the ruins in Jubilee Gardens. A large number of small pieces of chalk have flaked off, and some larger pieces are so loose that they come out if you touch them. The concern is whether the erosion of the chalk might cause larger pieces to fall with the risk of injury.
We have discussed this with Arun District Council who are responsible for the maintenance of the site. Following an inspection yesterday, a Herras fence will be placed around the ruins as a temporary safety measure, whilst discussions take place with Historic England on the structural repair work and protection that will be required to maintain the ruins in future.
