The Arundel Gallery Trail started in 1989, ten years after the first Arundel Festival. Ann Sutton had the original idea with an aim to create a walking art trail within the town for artists to showcase their work.
That first year included 50 temporary galleries within private homes, studios & historic buildings, alongside commercial galleries. Today the format remains almost unchanged with around 100 artists opening their doors to the public during Arundel’s main open-house Art event in August. The Trail is free and continues to provide a diversity of visual arts. There is a free Trail Guide and map produced each year and numbered flags to guide visitors around the 50 + Trail venues.
New to the Trail in 2019 was the Secret Artist Silent Auction of 50 original works. It is hoped that this will become a regular feature of the summer Gallery Trail. The Victoria Institute on Tarrant Street is rented by the Gallery Trail committee to be the Venue #1 Art Hub, exhibiting both the Secret Artist Exhibition together with an individual selection of work and installations by local and International artists.
The Trail is organised independently from the Festival and receives no outside funding, drawing its finances from the Registration fees paid by each participating artist or group. It is organised and managed by a small voluntary committee, which changes every few years. Meetings are held on an ad-hoc basis from January to September.
