Burpham Circular Walk

1 Start to Gate 1
From the car park, walk back along the access road and turn right in front of The George public house. Walk back along the route that brought you by car into the village. That is, walk for 100 metres to bear left and walk a further 380 metres and bear right by a small triangle of grass, where a small road leads off to the left. Take care of traffic to now go downhill on a bend for 50 metres and, as the road turns further to the right, turn left into Coombe Lane. There is a 'Thank You' sign by the entrance to Coombe Lane although it is not apparent what for. Walk for 500 metres on a rough but solid tarmac surface to a Southern Water facility on the right. Pass this and now continue on the same route, but now on a dirt track, for some 300 metres to reach a large wooden five bar gate with a smaller one to the right of it.

2 Gate 1 to Gate 2
Pass through the gate and continue on the same track. Ignore the right turn onto a footpath at a fingerpost after 200 metres, and continue ahead on the (also) signed bridleway. Continue ahead for a further 1km to gate 2, which is a large wooden five bar gate with a smaller one to the left of it.

3 Gate 2 to Hollow
Pass through the gate and continue ahead for a further 200 metres or so to exit the area at a crossroads of bridleways, with a four-way fingerpost on your right. Opposite is a double galvanised five bar gate with a small five bar gate to the right of it. Do NOT take this option but bear sharply left and follow a track gently downhill between two wire fences, with a newly planted hedge behind the right-hand one. Walk downhill for just over 500 metres to a crossroads of tracks in a bit of a valley. There is a three-way bridleway fingerpost here.

4 Hollow to Flint Farm Buildings
At this three-way fingerpost, continue straight ahead. Walking now uphill. Continue on this track for just over 900 metres to a T-junction of tracks and a three-way bridleway fingerpost. Turn left and walk for about 70 metres to reach another three-way fingerpost, with a track leading of to the right. Take the right-hand option onto a bridleway and walk for a further 150 metres. As you then approach a left-hand bend (with a small wood and a three-way fingerpost on the right), bear left to keep the trees on your right. Walk now for 220 metres ignoring a waymarker on the right pointing into the trees to reach a rough roadway. Turn left onto the roadway. Walk on this roadway for some 900 metres bearing left after some 750 metres, with a double galvanised five bar gate by a fingerpost on your right and fabulous views ahead looking over Arundel and down to the coast. Stay on the road and when you reach 900 metres pass a three-way finger post on the right pointing ahead and to the left. Continue ahead to some flint farm building and pass to the right of them.

5 Flint Farm Buildings to End
After passing the flint farm buildings the road, which is now of tarmac construction, bears right. Continue for 370 metres or so to reach a road junction with a grass triangle in the centre. Turn right here. Walk for 470 metres to a crossroads (with the right-hand option being a farm track). Take the left-hand option. Continue and, after about 400 metres, enter Burpham village again. Shortly after passing the church on the left, you will reach a T-junction. At this T-junction, turn left. 40 metres or so will bring you back to The George public house. Turn right just before it and walk the short distance back to the car park.
