The road to nowhere, where there is so much to see…

Not far from Arundel in the heart of the South Downs, Burpham and Wepham are two villages surrounded by thousands of acres of beautiful Sussex countryside. In 1867, these villages boasted a school, a veterinary surgeon, two shops, a wheelwright, a farmer, a shoemaker, a blacksmith, and, of course, the George at Burpham pub. The pub still welcomes walkers and those in search of tasty pub food.

The road to Burpham ends at the end of the village. But this road to nowhere has wonderful things to see along the way. Burpham’s ancient village green has a cricket pitch that actually sits within an ancient Saxon Fort. This fort gave the village its name. ‘Burpham’ is a combination of the Saxon words Burgh (fort) and Ham (village) From the village green you can enjoy wonderful views of Arundel Castle, which is only 3 miles away.
